Traditionally, the root of the valerian plant has been used for centuries dating back to at least the times of ancient Greece and Rome. Famous Greek physicians and philosophers Hippocrates and Galen were advocates of this herb, with the later prescribing valerian for insomnia.
In the 16th century, valerian was used to treat headaches, trembling, nervousness and heart palpitations. During WW2 it was used in England to relieve the stress of air raids (Valerian - Health Professional Fact Sheet)
Valerian root extract (Valeriana officinalis) is full of valuable ingredients. A particularly well-known one is Valerenic acid, which is also said to be involved in its calming, relaxing effect. In addition, valerian contains various terpenes, alkaloids and flavonoids, as well as minerals (copper, zinc, manganese) and amino acids.
Valerian supports levels of GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid), an important inhibitory neurotransmitter in the messenger substance in the nervous system. GABA inhibits certain stimuli in the brain, which is why it is said to have a calming, anti-anxiety effect.
