L-Methylfolate is the activated form of folate used by the body for many biochemical reactions.
Folic acid is the most common form of folate in supplements and fortified foods. However, it requires the enzyme methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) to be converted to L-Methylfolate. About half of the population have genetic variations that reduce the ability of the MTHFR enzyme to make this conversion. For this population, L-Methylfolate supplementation is far more effective in providing active folate. We offer supplementary active L-Methylfolate to circumvent this conversion.
Many who have a genetic MTHFR mutation are unable to utilise this B vitamin properly. For these individuals, the L-methylfolate (5-MTHF) is readily utilised by the body and has emerged as a popular alternative form of supplement to folic acid and folate.
