SIBO, the Causes & The Way Forward

Small Intestine Bowel Overgrowth (SIBO) has become common and well known by practitioners in the past decade. Between 6 to 15% of healthy and asymptomatic people have it while up to 80% of people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) have SIBO.

While bacteria are an essential part of a healthy small bowel and perform important functions, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth can promote intestinal hyperpermeability and a number of other symptoms.

SIBO is an example of how imbalances in lifestyle and gastrointestinal function can lead to what is now a distinct condition with its own validation test. Yet, simply addressing the bacterial imbalance is only ever going to be just part of the route to resolution in order to achieve good gut & overall health. So, rather than just focus on the SIBO itself, we must look more deeply into what its causes are and to address those factors for sustained good health.

During this presentation you will learn:

  • What SIBO is and how common it is.
  • About the testing methods for SIBO.
  • About the major risk factors for SIBO, conventional & other risk factors understood by functional medicine.
  • About what SIBO can lead to in terms of signs & symptoms.
  • About how to address SIBO with nutritional means.
  • About the low FODMAPs diet.
  • About the connection between SIBO and liver, gall bladder & pancreatic health.
  • About a sequence of intervention that can address the underlying causes.
