Stevia is a hydro-ethanol extract from stevia leaf (stevia rebaudiana) which is native to Brazil and Paraguay and uses as a dietary supplement as well as a natural sweetener. The constituents responsible for the sweet tase are steviol glcosides, including stevioside, rebaudiosides A-F, steviolbioside, isosteviol, and dulcoside A, of which Stevioside and rebaudioside A are the most abundant.

Steviol glycosides are approximately 250-300 times sweeter than sucurose. S.Rebaudiana also contains phytosterols such as stigmasterol, beta-sisterol, and campesterol, as well as flavonoids, diterpenes, triterpenes, vitamins and minerals.
Stevia may support health and wellbeing especially:

CARDIOVASCULAR AND METABOLIC SUPPORT
Stevioside within S.Rebaudiana may help to maintain healthy blood pressure levels already within the normal range. Blood pressure support from steviol glycosides may be related to alterations in glomerular filtration rate and transport of water and salt in renal tubules, supporting normal sodium and potassium excretion (Melis MS 1999). It may also help to maintain blood pressure and cholesterol levels already within the normal range.

Stevosides may also help to maintain both fasting and postprandial glucose levels already within the normal range as well as helping to decrease the intestinal absorption of glucose. Other potential benefits of stevia on healthy blood glucoses levels include:

  • May help to maintain normal insulin and glucagon levels.
  • Healthy insulin sensitivity in fat cells (adipocytes)
  • May help maintain healthy glycogen levels in the liver and muscle tissue.

MICROBIAL SUPPORT
S. Rebaudiana leaf extract may also help with diverse types of microbial support due to its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic properties.

INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE SUPPORT
S. Rebaudiana may help with healthy inflammatory responses. Stevoiside and its metabolite steviol may assist with cytokine support, helping to maintain healthy levels of TNF-alpha, IL-1-beta, Il-6, and NFkappaB already within the normal range.

ANTIOXIDANT SUPPORT
Polyphenols and flavonoids in S. Rebaudiana leaves may contribute antioxidant support to help with normal oxidative stress, and may help to maintain superoxide dismutase (SOD) levels already within the normal range, contributing antioxidant support.

Do not use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
If side effects occur, stop taking.
