Auto Immune Focus 2: Rheumatoid Arthritis

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is one of the most common auto-immune conditions. RA is a long-term autoimmune disorder that primarily affects joints. It typically results in warm, swollen, and painful joints. Pain and stiffness often worsen following rest. Most commonly, the wrist and hands are involved, with the same joints typically involved on both sides of the body. The disease may also affect other parts of the body. This may result in a low red blood cell count, inflammation around the lungs, and inflammation around the heart. Fever and low energy may also be present. Often, symptoms come on gradually over weeks to months.

About 1% of the population in the UK has RA – more than 400,000 people.. It affects more women than men. The most common age for people to develop RA is between 40 and 60, or a bit older for men.

By addressing the underlying causes with a functional medicine approach it is possible to make improvements in those with RA, and in some cases achieve freedom from the condition.

Antony will cover these learning outcomes in this webinar:

  • Understand Rheumatoid Arthritis, who gets it, and how many are diagnosed in the UK and the world.
  • Learn the traditional risk factors for RA
  • Learn researched underlying causes of RA including hidden bacterial infections
  • Learn about TNF-a, Nrf2 and NF-κB signalling pathways in RA
  • Learn about food sensitivity in RA
  • Learn why women are more likely to be diagnosed with RA
  • Learn about the risk factors of methotrexate & other medications used to treat RA
  • Learn about nutritional therapy interventions that may improve the management of RA, and which target underlying causes.
