Chanca Piedra is a hydroethanol extract made from the leaves and stems of Phyllanthus niruir, which belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. The most frequently used common name for Chanca Piedra is stone breaker.
Chanca Piedra is rich in nutrients as well as plant compounds including, flavonoids, alkalines, terpenes, bitter substances that can help stimulate appetite, helping to aid digestion and liver function.
Two human studies on chanca Piedra for kidney support concluded that its beneficial effects warranted further study:
- Study with 150 participants – standardised Chanca Piedra extract taken for 3 months helped maintain normal urinary flow. (Micali S et al 2006)
- Study with 69 participants – Chanca Piedra helped maintain urinary calcium levels already within the normal range. (Nishiura JL et al 2004)
- Study with 56 participants – Chanca Piedra infusion helped maintain urinary magnesium, potassium, uric acid and oxalate levels already within normal range.
Chanca Piedra may also provide the following:
- Antioxidant support – attributed to the constituent phenolic acids (chlorogenic and ellagic acids) and flavonoids.
- Liver Support – constituents of corilagin, kaempferol rhamnoside, brevifolin, quercetin and gallic acid may support liver health. The bitter substances may also stimulate digestion.
- Blood Sugar Support – Chanca Piedra has been used traditionally to maintain healthy blood-sugar levels already within the normal range.
- Gastrointestinal support – microbial support, helping to maintain healthy gastric mucosal tissue.
NOT TO BE USED IN PREGNANCY OR BREASTFEEDING.
