The Anaemias Webinar
Despite iron’s plentifulness on earth, iron deficiency is extremely common in humans, and is the most prevalent cause of anaemia worldwide. Iron deficiency is the most common cause of microcytic anaemia.
Whilst this is understandable in third world countries, iron-deficiency anaemia is also common in Western countries. However, it is not just iron-deficiency anaemias that affect the population groups attend us for nutritional guidance, there is also B12 deficiency anaemia which includes pernicious anaemia, an auto-immune condition, and less often folate, vitamin B6, copper and magnesium deficiency can also lead to anaemia.
Thalassaemia trait, major and minor, represents an inherited anaemia disorder. It presents challenges and in certain cases may require medical intervention in the form of transfusions as well iron chelation. Antony will briefly summarise information on this condition.
Antony will describe the distinction between microcytic, normocytic and macrocytic anaemias and describe the various analytes in standard haematology and the patterns that present with the various different types of anaemia. (This webinar will not be discussing sickle cell anaemia.)
The intention of this webinar is to increase understanding of anaemias, of haematology blood test results and give an NT confidence in knowing what nutritional intervention is required to support clients be it with iron, vitamin B12
